What Determines The Performance of Double Roll Crusher Toothed Segments?

Toothed Segments with TIC (4)Introduction

Double roll crusher toothed segments are widely used for crushing coal, coke, limestone, gangue, salt, and other mineral materials. During operation, two toothed rolls rotate toward each other, gripping and reducing the feed through splitting, shearing, and compression.

Although tooth profile and crusher settings affect crushing efficiency, the quality of a toothed segment can ultimately be evaluated through two practical factors: installation and service life.

1. Installation Depends on Manufacturing Accuracy

A good toothed segment must first fit the crusher correctly. Even a highly wear-resistant part cannot perform properly if its dimensions or mounting positions are inaccurate.

Installation accuracy is mainly determined by the production process, including pattern design, casting control, heat treatment, dimensional inspection, and machining. Poor casting control may cause deformation, shrinkage, or dimensional deviation. These issues can create difficulties during assembly and may result in uneven contact between the segment and the roll body.

Machining is therefore required for critical areas when the application demands tighter tolerances. Mounting surfaces, bolt holes, locating areas, and connecting dimensions should be inspected against the drawing before shipment. Accurate machining helps ensure easier installation, stable positioning, and correct load distribution during operation.

At Hyton, toothed segments can be manufactured according to customer drawings or samples. Machining requirements are determined according to the segment structure, installation method, and required dimensional tolerances.

2. Service Life Depends Mainly on Material Selection

After correct installation, service life becomes the most important performance indicator. The appropriate material should be selected according to feed hardness, abrasiveness, impact level, feed size, and operating conditions.

High manganese steel provides excellent toughness and is suitable for applications involving repeated impact. However, when processing highly abrasive materials, standard manganese steel may experience rapid wear at the tooth tips and leading edges.

To improve wear resistance, titanium carbide (TiC) inserts can be embedded in these high-wear areas. The manganese steel matrix absorbs impact, while the hard TiC inserts resist abrasive wear. Depending on the application, this combination can provide approximately 1.5 to 2 times the service life of conventional manganese steel segments.

3. A Reliable Segment Requires Both Fit and Durability

The best toothed segment is not simply the hardest one. It must combine accurate manufacturing for trouble-free installation with suitable materials for longer service life.

By controlling casting quality, machining critical dimensions, and customizing the material and TiC insert distribution, Hyton provides toothed segments designed to fit correctly, wear evenly, and reduce maintenance downtime.
